A Letter From Grandma

"Dear Family, I have become a little older, and a few changes have come into my life since then. Frankly, I have become a frivolous old gal. I am seeing five gentlemen everyday.

As soon as I wake up Will Power helps me get out of bed.

Then I go to see John.

Then Charlie Horse comes along, and when he is here he takes a lot of my time and attention.

When he leaves, Arthur Ritis shows up and stays the rest of the day. He doesn't like to stay in one place very long, as he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day, I'm really tired and glad to go to bed with Ben Gay.

What a life.

Oh yes, I am also flirting with Al Zymer.

Love, Grandma

P. S. The preacher came to call the other day. He said at my age I should be thinking of the hereafter. I told him, "Oh I do it all the time. No matter where I am, in the parlor, upstairs, in the kitchen, or down in the basement, I ask myself, "Now, what am I here after?"

I'm A Bit Older, Lord!

Things are getting a bit rough down here, Lord-
Today, I am seventy-four!
I've never had much to complain about;
I couldn't have asked for more;
But today, well, the road just seems long, Father,
And my body grows tired too soon;
At the end of the day it is just good to say:
I'm going up to my room.
There I know a good book awaits me,
And a quiet atmosphere;
In the hush of that place there's a smile on my face
Because Your dear Presence is near.

You've given me the best in life, Lord-
A good husband and children, too;
For this I'll be eternally grateful,
But now, well I'm homesick for You!
Oh, I'm not ready to cross that river,
Nor to close that last great door;
Guess I just want to cry on your shoulder, Lord.
Now that I'm seventy-four.

The Heresy Of Old Age

Today we are told everything hinges on the way we train our minds. Nothing is wrong unless we think it is wrong. Nothing is right unless we can prove it right with our mental faculties. Now, what about the myth of OLD AGE? If everybody would suddenly resolve to be young and strong, billions of dollars could be saved at national, state and local levels that are now being expended on doctors, medical treatments, and handicap fixtures. --- Its all a matter of the mind!

The Bible Says Man Has A Limited Life Span

"The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is there strength, labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off and, we fly away." (Psalm 90:10).

"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment" (Hebrews 9:27).

"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off" (Hebrews 11:13).

You Tell Me I'm Getting Old

You tell me I am getting old,
I tell you that's not so!
The "house" I live in's wearing out
And that, of course, I know.
It's been in use a long, long while
It's weathered many a gale;
I'm really not surprised you think
It's getting somewhat frail.
The color's changing on the roof,
The windows --- getting dim;
The walls a bit transparent
And looking rather thin;
The foundation's not so steady
As once it used to be;
My house is getting shaky,
But "my house" isn't me!

A few short years can't make me old,
I feel I'm in my youth;
Eternity lies just ahead.
A life of joy and truth.
I'm going to live forever, there;
Life will go on --- it's grand!
You tell me I'm getting old?
You just don't understand.
The dweller in my little "house"
Is young, and bright --- I'd say
Just starting on a life to last
Throughout eternal day.
You see only the outside,
Which is all that most folks see.
You tell me I am getting old?
You've mixed my "house" with me!

A Prayer Of The Aged

"Father Thou knowest I am getting old. Keep me from becoming talkative and possessed with the idea that I must express myself on every subject. Release me from the craving to straighten out everyone's affairs.

"Keep my mind free from the recital of endless detail. Give me wings to go to the point. Seal my lips when I am inclined to tell of all my aches and pains . . . teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be wrong . . . make me thoughtful but not nosy, helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom and experience it does seem a pity not to use it all, but Thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends in the end. AMEN!"
