The Bible Says

God's Presence Is The Answer
by Charlie Grier

People have a way of keeping their emotions pretty well under control. We meet on the street with a friendly greeting and a pleasant smile. On the surface everything is just great! But down inside there are hurts and pain that are seldom shared, even with closest friends or loved ones. Why do people drive hundreds of miles on vacation trips? Most vacations are not to busy city streets, but away from people, noise and commotion. We go out to the "wiles" - just as far away as possible. Why? We may not be aware of it, but what we need, and what our inner being craves, is to be alone and relax, with our Maker, Redeemer, and Friend.

OUT IN THE FIELDS WITH GOD
By Elisabeth Barrett Browning

The little cares that fretted me,
I lost them yesterday,
Among the fields, above the sea,
Among the winds at play;
Among the lowing of the herds,
The rustling of the trees;
Among the singing of the birds,
And humming of the bees.

The foolish fears of what may happen,
I cast them all away
Among the clover-scented grass,
Among the new-mown hay;
Among the rustling of the corn,
Where drowsy poppies nod,
Where ill thoughts die and good are born-
Out in the fields with God.

Through the years I have tried to decide which season I enjoyed most. Strange as it may seem cold winters have always been a challenge to me. Crisp, cold, 40-below weather has stirred an inner-impulse to go out and cut timber (when I was young), or face whatever challenge was mine at the time. I believe I was able, on the average, to cut more timber on a cold day than at any other time.

Springtime is always welcome to everyone. As flowers blossom and all nature comes alive once more each year, I am always reminded of the triumphant Resurrection of our beloved Lord and, because of that miraculous event, the blessed fact that we too, will one day enjoy resurrection bodies, "Like unto His own glorious body" (Philippians 3:21), and be able to enjoy those remarkable bodies throughout all eternity!

Summer is the season that everybody loves. Without summer, human life would cease to exist on the earth because only in summer and early fall are gardens, fruits, and golden grain harvested. Without these common commodities, mortal life could not be sustained.

Then comes OCTOBER! - not too hot, and not too cold -beautiful and enjoyable! This rule does not always hold, but across the board I think this is true. At least this was my appraisal when I wrote the following poem, a number of years ago.

NATURE'S WONDERLAND
by Charlie Grier

I drove through Minnesota
One bright October day
And saw in nature's wonderland
A glorious display.

No landscaper in all the world
Could plan so rich a scene -
I stood in awe as I beheld
This tapestry serene.
A million skillful weavers
Could not match the color scheme -
No artist could begin to paint
This beauty I have seen!

I saw the oaks and maples -
I saw the stately pines,
The whitewashed birch with golden leaves,
Their colors all entwined.
The picturesque red shumac
Spread a carpet on the hill
And blended with the other hues
In great artistic skill.

"This is my state," I proudly cried,
"The land that gave me birth!
I would not trade my heritage
For any spot on earth!"
And then I bowed in worship
Before the God above
Who gave to man such splendor-
A token of His Love!

What a wonderful world we live in! Every creature on earth, from the smallest insect to the largest mammal, are here because God created them and cannot be accounted for in any other way. Jesus said:

"And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: and yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these." (Matthew 6:28,29).

The day science is able to produce from lifeless material, ONE LILY THAT WILL GROW, I will become an ardent evolutionist. One of the reasons I enjoy raising flowers is that I can see the handiwork of God in every little leaf and pedal.

Psalm 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork."
