The Bible Says

Most People Are Naturally Compassionate
by Charlie Grier

Jeff and Mary Ann Anderson have for many years been missionaries in Manila. They work with Action International Ministries. Ken and Marvine worked with this couple at MIDWEST CHALLENGE some 35 years ago. They send out a rather lengthy illustrated News Letter that is quite exciting to read. I will share a few portions of that letter that I believe you will find extremely interesting:

Muddy Relief Work

“From late November through December 1, 04 “Super” typhoons hit just north and east of Manila causing terrible damage and about 1,800 deaths. Since then our relief team, which is also our street children ministry team, has been very busy doing relief, medical and evangelistic work among the victims of the mud-slides. As of now we have done nine major relief operations in Aurora, Queson, Marindouque, Camarines, Sur, and Bulacan Provincies. We have
  • distributed emergency relief food and supplies to 1,917 families.
  • provided medical services to 1,325 people.
  • replaced the roof on a church in the mountains of Mindoro
  • purchased a 36” chain saw so people can make lumber out of the logs that destroyed their homes.
  • facilitated trauma counseling for 250 elementary students.
  • Shared the Gospel through open air preaching and one-on-one counseling. We have seen many people indicate putting their trust in Jesus Christ as Savior.

“Many churches in Manila collected relief goods and entrusted them to us to distribute and provided enthusiastic workers who helped in purchasing, packing, loading, preaching, counseling and caring. By God’s grace we are determined to assist those who are struggling to rebuild their lives and understand God’s purpose in these tragic events. Thank you for being a fellow burden bearer. Total costs thus far $18,227.

Tsunami and Katrina Touch All Of Our Hearts

“We have cause for amazement at the world-wide response each time calamity strikes. The little country of Kuwait promptly sent millions of dollars almost immediately after that typhoon struck New Orleans. Other friendly nations have responded while churches of all denominations have gone all out to share with these unfortunate victims of the storm.

OUR REDEEMER LUTHREN CHURCH

Is planning to raise $2,000.00 or more for Katrina relief. What other churches of the area are planning may not be made public. This may be true of denominations, as well. I happen to have a Church Letter from the President of one denomination, and I will share portions of that letter with my readers.

Christian & Missionary Alliance

Katrina quickly changed our focus. From across the nation, the Alliance family is responding. My good friend, Pastor Don Young, from Genesis Church in Foley, Alabama, has received hundreds of offers of help as his church reaches out to survivors. Gifts of fuel, food, supplies, and infant formula are being trucked from his church to Waveland, Mississippi. Work teams from your churches are making plans to travel to the devastated area as soon as Don gives the word, and donations through CAMA are pouring in. . .

“The Alliance is partnering with the town of Waveland on the Mississippi Gulf Coast to bring relief to a community of 700 people. . .

“Our pastors in New Orleans, Willam Neudahl, and Ncoc Tran, are anxious to return to their churches. They’ll need funds and manpower to rebuild lives.”

August 31, 2005

Women wept as they threw dirt on their heads and beat themselves with sticks or whips. Many cried out to Allah to drop a bomb on them and their family so that they would not have to face the future in Afghanistan. Hundreds of thousands of refugee laid sprawled out on the heavily mined desolate plain just east of Jalalabad. No food, water or electricity. Many had walked days to escape the heavy bombings. All had lost family members in recent days.

I cried out to God to help me. I felt I was being physically crushed as I stood in the middle of this sea of human misery. What could I, one person, possibly do to make a difference? The need was beyond comprehension.

The same feeling overwhelms us now as we watch the unfolding disaster in the Gulf Coast South. We can completely understand the difficulties and complexities of the job of FEMA and other relief workers in Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Thanks to your faithfulness, the Gospel is being preached everyday to the people of Central Asia, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.

Love,

Steve and Rosemary

Scores of other Christian Movements, such as Campus Crusade, and Billy Graham Evangelistic Association have given all-out help in the Katrina calamity. Non Christian organizations as well, have quickly responded with whatever help they were able to provide. All this proves once gain that people everywhere have compassionate hearts. All were created in the image of God and it is GOD’S nature to love!

Had It Not Been For Man’s Fall,
All Would Be Characterized By Love!

Since we are all family members of a fallen race, the Bible says:

“All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

But we have been Redeemed (Gal. 3:13).

“We know that we have passed from death unto life,
because we love the brethren.” (I John 3:14).
