  The Bible Says
David faced a new problem almost every day of his life, but in spite of, and in the midst of his problems, he made a fitting resolution: “I will bless the Lord at ALL times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalms 34:1,2 NKJB). This new lifestyle became the pattern of David’s life and he became “A man after God’s own heart” (Acts 13:22). Wouldn’t that be a good NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION for all of us, in 2006? If praising God were to become everybody’s lifestyle, what a beautiful world this would be! The “gospel of prosperity” is one of the errors commonly proclaimed in America today. People are told if they become Christians and pay their tithe faithfully, they can claim physical healing, financial prosperity, and the elimination of every problem ( 1 Timothy 6:5-10). Here are the exact words of Christ concerning this matter: “Do not think that I am come to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law and a man’s enemies will be those of his own household. He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. “And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 10:34-39 NKJB).
When Saul met up with Jesus on the Damascus road, Christ changed his name to “Paul” but he did not promise him prosperity. Instead he warned him of the sufferings he must endure in sharing the Gospel in a world of hostility (Acts 9:16). Here is Paul’s later testimony: “From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness – ”(2 Corinthians 11:24-27 NKJB). Despite persecution, Paul and Silas could sing praises to God while in jail with their feet in the stocks (Acts 16:22-25). God has set up a communication system between earth and heaven so that every time the load gets heavy and we see no way out, we can call for help from One who knows our problem, understands and cares.
