    The Bible Says...

    LOVE PROMPTED PENTECOST

    by Charlie Grier

Prior to the Day of Pentecost, 120 believing disciples spent several weeks in the upper room in fervent prayer until every heart was softened and they had all fallen in love with the entire human race. To be sure they were not happy with the sin that was being practiced, but God had put in their hearts a love for sinners and they were ready now to do their best to reach them for Christ, as He had commissioned them to do. John and James no longer wanted to call down fire from heaven upon them and Peter was no longer eager to chop off somebody’s ear. The Bible says, "they were all with one accord" (Acts 2:1). Had that been all that happened that day, that in itself would have been outstanding!

When one reads the second chapter of Acts, it is clear that the love which was so obvious that day, was but a springboard to better things. God poured out His Spirit: the Church was born – 3000 souls were won to Christ and a whole book of miracles followed! That book is called The Acts Of The Apostles. It all started when men and women fell in love with Jesus Christ and He, in turn, enabled them to love even the unlovely!

Something akin to that took place in my life on October 27, when friends and relatives drove 20, 30, 40 and up to 230 miles to help me celebrate my 95th Birthday. Some who could not attend sent greetings. I was almost overwhelmed by the outstanding love manifested that day – I didn’t know I had so many friends!

This is the kind of love that characterized the early church. This is the kind of love that prompts my daughter to take time out of her busy life to minister to those in the Nursing Home. She doesn’t get paid to go there twice a month. The people all love her and love for them beams from her face until the entire place is saturated with Gods love and His Divine Presence.

It has been said: "Wherever you find love, you find self-denial. Those who deserve love the least need it the most. Works, not words, are the proof of love."

    DON’T LET ME TURN AWAY

    -author unknown

I saw the woman lying there, her body wracked with pain
Her face distorted as she cried, her mind no longer sane.
Her dying body told me, she needed help that day
But I had work at home to do and quickly turned away.
I saw the child just sitting there in the firsthand dust and flies
The tear-stained face so dirty, with matter in her eyes.
The bloated stomach told me, she’d not eaten in many a day.
I couldn’t stand the sight of her and quickly turned away.
I saw the drunk staggering along with people making fun,
He’d lost his job and wife and kids --now there wasn’t anyone.
I saw him stumble and then fall down --he couldn’t find his way.
I had to go to work right then and quickly turned away.
I saw that one in jail, just a boy not out of teens.
He looked so lost and lonely, barefoot and tattered jeans.
He’d killed a man in desperate rage, was high on dope they say
But I was on my way to church and quickly turned away.
I saw a cross upon a hill, a man was hanging there.
His body bruised and beaten, but nobody seemed to care.
He’d shed His blood for all the world, paid the penalty that day.
It was an ugly sight to see but I could not turn away.
I knew He’d done it all for me! The ransom had been paid.
But not for me alone that this sacrifice was made!
He’d died for each one that I’d scorned and left and went my way.
But now I would go quickly back and help each one today.
When I returned, I sadly found that one by one they’d died.
My help had come too late for them and bitterly I cried.
"Oh help me God to really care to serve you day by day!
No matter what the cost to me, don’t let me turn away."

    GOD’S LOVE FULFILLS THE LAW

"...for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law" (Romans 13:8-10).

    WHAT OTHERS SAY ABOUT LOVE

"When iron is rubbed against a magnet, it becomes magnetic. Just so, love is caught, not taught. One heart burning with love sets another on fire. The church was built on love: it proves what love can do."

    Frank C. Laubach

"There is no surprise more wonderful than the surprise of being loved; it is God’s finger on man’s shoulder."

    - Charles Morgan

"Love is not only something you feel. It’s something you do."

    David Wilkerson
